Dubai schools urge parents to halt unauthorized campus photography amid privacy laws

Private schools across Dubai are issuing new directives urging parents and visitors to refrain from taking unauthorized photographs or videos on school premises to protect student privacy. Recent circulars sent to families emphasize that capturing images where other students or staff might be visible—whether in classrooms, corridors, assemblies, or drop-off zones—is strictly prohibited without explicit consent. Furthermore, parents are warned against sharing such media on social platforms or WhatsApp groups.

The updated guidance aligns with the UAE’s Federal Decree Law No. 45 of 2021 on the Protection of Personal Data, which mandates that personal data generally cannot be processed without consent. It also complies with the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) protocols regarding student safeguarding. While schools still want families to celebrate their children’s milestones, photography will now be restricted to officially designated opportunities and events where established consent and privacy procedures are in place.
