Qatar Emir hails country’s resilience during ‘exceptional events’ at Shura Council

At the opening session of Qatar’s Shura Council, Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani praised the cohesion and resilience of the nation’s people and institutions during recent “exceptional events” in the region.

Commending the armed forces and security apparatus, the Emir highlighted their bravery in defending the homeland following an aggression by Iran, which he described as a flagrant violation of Qatar’s sovereignty and international law.

During the crisis, the Emir stated that Qatar shouldered three main responsibilities: protecting its sovereignty, fulfilling its role in global energy security, and keeping diplomatic channels open. He outlined a four-point strategy focusing on firm defense without escalating to war, preserving supply chains, contributing to ceasefire efforts, and urging negotiated peaceful solutions.

Addressing the economic impact, the Emir noted that the closure of the strategic Strait of Hormuz and direct damage to energy facilities in Ras Laffan disrupted a significant portion of exports. He emphasized that any impact on Qatar quickly reflects on global markets, as the country accounts for roughly one-fifth of global liquefied natural gas (LNG) trade.
