Saudi Arabia lifted a security alert in Khamis Mushait on Wednesday, a day after a major wave of Houthi attacks struck targets in the Kingdom’s southern region.
Saudi Civil Defense said the danger in the Khamis Mushait area had subsided. The alert followed attacks on Tuesday that targeted an airbase in the city and energy infrastructure in nearby areas.
The attacks left 73 people injured and caused fires at several oil-related facilities, according to Saudi authorities.
The latest escalation marks one of the most serious attacks on Saudi territory since the wider regional conflict began earlier this year. It also raises fresh concerns over the security of the Kingdom’s energy infrastructure and the potential impact on regional oil supplies.
The attacks come after a prolonged period of relative calm between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis following the 2022 truce.
For residents and businesses in southern Saudi Arabia, the immediate priority remains public safety. For international energy markets, attention is turning to whether the attacks will lead to further disruption to Saudi production or exports.
Saudi authorities have described the attacks as a serious escalation and said the Kingdom would take measures to protect its territory.
